For Immediate Release Full cast announced for New Muses’ Saint JoanNew Muses announces casting for their upcoming return to live performances with Shaw's Saint Joan TACOMA, WA: New Muses Theatre Company has revealed the full cast for their upcoming production of George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan. The production will perform in front of a vaccinated-only live audience at the Dukesbay Theater in Tacoma from July 30 thru August 15. The production will be filmed and released for on-demand viewing by non-vaccinated audience members after the conclusion of the live run. The cast is led by returning company member Cassie Jo Fastabend (New Muses' Lysistrata) in the role of Joan. She will be joined by an exciting ensemble of new and returning actors including David Breyman (Shakespeare in Love at Tacoma Arts Live) as Charles VIII, Ben Stahl (Frankenstein) as the Inquisitor, Eric Cuestas-Thompson (Ghosts) as the Chaplain, and Tacoma theatre mainstay Joseph Grant as Cauchon. The cast also includes Darius Sakui as Dunois, Craig Rock (Miracle on 34th St at Seattle Musical Theater) as the Archbishop, and Alan C. Foster (The Taming of the Shrew with Tol and Smol) as Warwick. Said Managing Artistic Director Niclas Olson, who directs from his own adaptation, "I'm really thrilled by the mix of New Muses veterans and newcomers involved as we return to live performances. They bring a wide range of talent and experience that will turn into something special." Olson explained that he chose to bring Saint Joan to the stage several years ago. "Throughout our history, whenever we have asked for audience recommendations on future titles Joan has always made an appearance. Sometimes it was one request, sometimes several, but she was always there. As I was setting up our potential slate for this year it seemed like a good time for this particular political thriller to take the stage." Premiering in 1923, three years after Joan of Arc's canonization by the Roman Catholic Church, Shaw's long preface to the play includes the view that, "There are no villains in the piece. Crime, like disease, is not interesting: it is something to be done away with by general consent, and that is all [there is] about it. It is what men do at their best, with good intentions, and what normal men and women find that they must and will do in spite of their intentions, that really concern us." Often characterized as, "a tragedy without villains," the story of Joan of Arc and her struggle for the soul and sovereignty of France against the backdrop of the Hundred Years War remains relevant and recognizable to this day. Said Olson, "One of the strengths I've discussed in rehearsal is how closely the themes parallel our current times. Switch out a couple words and it could take place anytime in the last couple years." Saint Joan will run for nine performances from July 30 - August 15 at the Dukesbay Theater (508 6th Ave, Tacoma). Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 and Sunday matinees at 2:00. Tickets are $15 and available online at www.NewMuses.com. Seating is limited and advance purchase is highly recommended. Admission for Saint Joan is limited to vaccinated audience members only and face masks are required. Proof of vaccination will be required for all party members. The production will be filmed and released for on-demand viewing by non-vaccinated audience members after the conclusion of the live run. New Muses is adding our voice to the chorus calling for an end to the epidemic of murder which has plagued this country. The murder, physical abuse, and injustice that has terrorized the Black community for so long needs to end. There is no place for racism, intolerance, and hate in our theaters, in our communities, and certainly not in our police departments or government. Black lives matter.

Steve was a phenomenal actor and valued company member who brought tremendous energy and dedication to every performance. We were lucky enough to work with Steve as Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, the Father is Six Characters in Search of an Author, and Orgon in last summer’s Tartuffe. That list alone shows the versatility Steve was able to bring to the stage. Managing Artistic Director Niclas Olson shared the following thoughts, “It was always a pleasure to direct Steve, his determination as he tackled truly difficult roles was phenomenal. One conversation, which we actually had in various forms several times, always stands out to me when I think about Steve. He was able to articulate so well why we, as professional artists, would choose to work in fringe theatre. He talked about the value of 'the opportunity to act,' and expressed his joy and satisfaction in being able to pursue his craft, no matter where that might be. I will always be grateful that for a short time he chose to pursue it with us. I have lost a friend and artistic collaborator who understood the ‘why’ of New Muses in a way that few people really do, and it is impossible to put into words what that meant to me.” What many people may not know is how supportive Steve was behind the scenes. He was a tireless recruiter to bring actors into the fold, even on shows he wasn’t performing in, and to fill the seats of our small theater. His work on stage, film, and in the community leaves a powerful legacy. We don’t have a marquee to dim, but all of our logos will be dimmed across social media and the internet for the next week in Steve’s honor. Our thoughts are with Steve’s family, friends, and colleagues throughout this difficult time. Steve: You will be missed, thank you for everything.
For immediate release New Muses' The Seagull to open August 9 at the Dukesbay TheaterNew Muses Theatre Company brings Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull to Tacoma’s Dukesbay Theater to close out their tenth season. TACOMA, WA: New Muses Theatre Company will close out their tenth season with a new production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull beginning August 9. The production will continue their residence at Tacoma’s Dukesbay Theater. Said Managing Artistic Director Niclas Olson, “We’re thrilled to finally bring The Seagull to the stage. We had a quote from the play, “We need new forms, new forms are needed, and if we can’t have them we had better have nothing at all,” on our website for the first couple years of our existence. That quote really structured our approach to bringing classic material to contemporary audiences over the last ten seasons, and it’s so exciting to finally hear it from the stage as we reach the end of our tenth season.” The production features a cast led by New Muses company members Angela Parisotto (Hamlet, Lysistrata) as Irina Nikolayevna, Joel Thomas (Tartuffe, TLT’s Laura) as Konstantin Gavrilovich and newcomer Lara Dohner as Nina. They are joined by a mix of returning company members including Jazmine Herrington (New Muses Tartuffe and Lysistrata) as Masha and Keith Ordonez (Lysistrata) as Medvedenko along with local talents Edward Medina (Screaming Butterflies’ Richard II), Kristen Blegen Bouyer (TLT’s Rumors) and Alex Koerger (TLT’s Of Mice and Men) making their New Muses debuts. Managing artistic director Niclas Olson rounds out the cast in the role of Trigorin. The Seagull premiered in 1896 and has since come to be regarded as the first major work of playwright Anton Chekhov. Telling the story of the fallout from aging actress Irina’s decision to bring famous writer Trigorin home to her brother’s country estate, the play is a moving testament to writers, actors, and those who know them. Said Olson, who also directs from his own adaptation, “I agree with Chekhov that the play is ultimately a comedy. Although it takes a tragic turn towards the end, the bulk of the action is about a loving family spending time together enjoying one another’s company. It’s full of romantic entanglements and unforgettable characters and makes for a great summer evening at the theater.” The Seagull will run from August 9-25 at the Dukesbay Theater (508 6th Ave, Tacoma). Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm with Sunday matinees at 2pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchase in advance from the New Muses website or at the door. For Immediate Release TACOMA, WA: New Muses Theatre Company has rescheduled their one-night-only staged reading of William Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST. The production, originally scheduled for July 8th, will now close the season on the evening of August 26th. Managing Artistic Director Niclas Olson explained the change, saying, “Unlike many of the titles we feature in our staged reading series, THE TEMPEST is a show that we are expecting to have life beyond a single performance. We’re treating this presentation as a workshop for a production that will potentially tour the region in the next several years. With the timeline we were under to hit the July 8 deadline it became apparent that we were doing a disservice to the show and our audience by rushing it to the stage. We look forward to seeing everyone in August as we finally reveal the show to the public. New Muses current production of Aristophanes’ LYSISTRATA continues performances through July 15 and will be followed by the classic Yiddish drama GOD OF VENGEANCE. ***
For Immediate Release New Muses postpones The Tempest New Muses Theatre Company has postponed their upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. TACOMA, WA: New Muses Theatre Company’s presentation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest will be postponed to a later date in the season. Managing Artistic Director Niclas Olson cited scheduling conflicts with the creative team as the reason for postponement. Olson is currently working on booking a new venue and confirming revised performance dates. Speaking of the schedule change he said, “Postponement is always a tough decision, but it became obvious that our team needed more time to prepare their vision for this beautiful script. I can’t wait to bring this show to life and share Shakespeare’s magical story with our audience.” New Muses season will return to the Dukesbay Theater as scheduled this summer with Arisophanes’ Lysistrata and Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance.
